August Anticipation: Living the Chapter You’re In

There is something about August.
Summer is still here. The days are long. The evenings linger. There is still time for one more swim, one more dinner outside, one more lazy morning.
And yet…
You can feel it coming.
The back-to-school lists. The new schedules. The calendar filling up. The familiar rhythm of September waiting just around the corner.
August carries a particular kind of anticipation.
A little excitement. A little resistance. A little nostalgia. Maybe even a little anxiety.
And this year, I’m trying something different.
I’m leaning into it.
This summer, I gave myself permission to do something I don’t always do very well.
I slowed down.
I stepped back from creating, teaching, and producing. I spent time listening—to my family, to myself, and to the quiet whispers that can so easily get drowned out by busy schedules and endless to-do lists.
And somewhere along the way, life reminded me of something I coach others through every day.
The older I get, the more I notice the beautiful loops of life. The unexpected full-circle moments. The conversations that return years later with new meaning. The relationships that deepen. The dreams that evolve. The lessons that patiently wait for us until we’re finally ready to receive them.
Those moments aren’t coincidences.
They’re invitations.
I’ve come away from this summer more convinced than ever that life invites participation, not observation.
We aren’t meant to simply watch our lives unfold or wait for the “right” moment to begin again.
To intentionally create what’s next. And that requires something many of us were never taught:
Emotional agility.
The ability to stay open when life changes. To loosen our grip on expectations.
To notice what we’re feeling without letting that feeling dictate our entire story.
To respond rather than react. To move with life rather than constantly fighting against it.
Because here’s something worth remembering as August unfolds:
How we think affects how we feel.
Mindset matters.
We don’t always get to choose what happens next.
We don’t get to control the calendar, the changes, the endings, the new beginnings, or everything happening around us.
But we do have some agency over the lens through which we experience them.
We can look at September and think:
“Summer is over. Everything is about to get crazy.”
Or we can try:
“A new season is coming. What might it make possible?”
Same calendar.
Different mindset.
Different emotional experience.
That doesn’t mean forcing positivity or pretending everything is wonderful.
It means becoming intentional about the stories we tell ourselves.
It means noticing when our thoughts are creating unnecessary fear, resistance, or overwhelm—and asking whether another perspective might serve us better.
Because sometimes the most powerful change isn’t changing the circumstance.
It’s changing the way we meet it.

Four Mindset Shifts for August
🌱 1. Instead of resisting the next season, get curious about it.
The season you’re in is preparing you for the season that’s coming.
Rather than rushing to hold onto summer or bracing yourself for September, ask:
What might this next season make possible?
Anticipation doesn’t have to mean anxiety.
It can also mean possibility.
🌊 2. Let transitions teach you.
Transitions aren’t interruptions to life.
They are life.
Rather than asking, “Why is this happening?”
Try asking: “What is this transition here to teach me?”
That small shift can turn uncertainty into curiosity.
❤️ 3. Remember yourself.
Our culture celebrates reinvention.
But I believe something different.
It’s not about reinventing yourself. It’s about remembering yourself.
Beneath the expectations, responsibilities, titles, and roles is the person you’ve
always been. Every transition offers an opportunity to reconnect with that person.
To ask: What matters to me now?
Not who was I supposed to be?
Not who does everyone else need me to be?
But who am I becoming—and what do I want to carry forward?
➡️ 4. Look back—but only long enough to move forward.
Reflection is valuable.
But reflection isn’t meant to keep us living in yesterday.
We look back to gather wisdom.
To notice the patterns.
To honor what we’ve learned.
To recognize the full-circle moments.
And then…
we move forward.
With momentum.
With meaning.
With hope.
As we hold onto these final golden weeks before calendars fill, routines return, and backpacks replace beach bags, I want to invite you to resist the urge to rush through August.
Instead, be here.
Take a deep breath.
Let the sunshine soak into your skin.
Notice the laughter.
The ordinary moments.
The conversations around the dinner table.
The quiet mornings.
The messy afternoons.
The last-minute adventures.
These are the moments that become our lives.
And when that little voice starts saying, “Summer is almost over…”
Try answering it with: “What can I savor while I’m still here?”
Because your next chapter doesn’t begin when the season changes.
It’s already unfolding.
And perhaps the invitation of August is simply to participate fully in the chapter you’re living—while staying curious about the one that’s coming.
Next Chapter Reflection
Before you step into the week ahead, give yourself five quiet minutes.
Take a breath.
And ask yourself:
What am I anticipating about the season ahead?
Where am I feeling excitement—and where am I feeling resistance?
What story am I telling myself about what’s coming?
Is that story helping me or weighing me down?
What might become possible if I approached this next season with curiosity instead of fear?
What did this summer teach me that I want to carry forward?
What part of myself am I remembering?
What is one intentional step I can take to participate more fully in my own life?
Remember…
✨ Life invites participation, not observation.
✨ The season you’re in is preparing you for the season that’s coming.
✨ Transitions aren’t interruptions—they’re teachers.
✨ How we think affects how we feel. Mindset matters.
✨ You don’t need to reinvent yourself. You need to remember yourself.
✨ Look back only long enough to gather wisdom, then move forward with momentum, meaning, and hope.
And as August turns toward September, perhaps we don’t have to choose between holding onto summer and embracing what’s next.
We can do both.
We can savor where we are while becoming curious about where we’re going.
Because your best next chapter isn’t one you stumble into.
It’s one you intentionally create.

Next Chapter Living
Because every chapter has something to teach us—and every next chapter begins by remembering who we truly are.
